DF Tube for Edge: installation, settings and useful alternatives
Looking for DF Tube for Edge? Check the right extension, install it when available, fix common problems, and choose a calmer YouTube setup.
Microsoft Edge can use extensions from the Chrome Web Store, but finding a result called “DF Tube” does not guarantee that the particular extension is available or compatible. Start with the exact store listing, check who publishes it, and install only if the store offers that option in your current Edge browser. Microsoft’s installation instructions
That distinction matters because the original DF Tube and newer extensions with similar names are easy to confuse. This guide covers desktop Edge, the settings worth trying first, and what to check if the YouTube page stays cluttered.
Store listings and official documentation checked on 16 October 2026. This guide is based on those sources; it is not a hands-on test of the extensions in Edge.
Which DF Tube are you looking for?
Older guides refer to the original DF Tube (Distraction Free for YouTube) by calkuta. An open-source update project credits that original author and describes its own changes for Chrome’s newer extension format. That project is useful evidence of the distinction between an original extension and someone else’s updated version.
DF Tube New (Distraction Free for YouTube) has a separate Chrome Web Store listing, which links to focusapps.app. At the time of this check, the listing described controls for hiding recommendations, Shorts and comments, plus disabling autoplay. Those are the publisher’s stated features; we have not independently tested their current behavior.
Do not assume that a familiar name means the same developer, permissions or maintenance history. Open the product page rather than installing straight from an old tutorial. Check:
- The full extension name and the publisher or developer website.
- What the extension says it can hide.
- The update information and support route.
- The permissions shown when you install it.
An update date helps identify a listing. It does not prove that every feature works with today’s YouTube layout. A rating is also no substitute for checking whether the extension does the particular job you need.
Try these free YouTube settings first
If your main problem is that one video becomes five, turn off Autoplay using the switch in the video player. YouTube says autoplay settings can differ between devices, so check Edge itself even if you already disabled autoplay on your phone. YouTube’s autoplay guide
If the problem is getting pulled into unrelated recommendations before you reach a channel, bookmark YouTube Subscriptions. YouTube describes that feed as showing recent uploads from channels you follow. Opening it directly gives your session a more deliberate starting point. YouTube’s subscription guide
For a quieter Home page, YouTube also documents turning off and deleting watch history. The condition matters: Home recommendations are removed when watch history is off and there is no significant prior watch history. Pausing history alone is not a universal switch for an empty homepage. Videos watched while history is off will not appear in that history, so consider whether you rely on it to find unfinished videos. YouTube’s watch-history guidance
Try the smallest change that addresses your problem. You may only need an autoplay switch and a better bookmark. For a broader comparison of approaches, see our distraction-free YouTube guide.
How to install a compatible extension in Edge
Use Microsoft’s documented installation route if the store offers installation in your current Edge browser:
- In Microsoft Edge, open the chosen Chrome Web Store listing.
- Check its title and developer, then select the installation button.
- If prompted, choose Allow extensions from other stores to continue.
- Review permissions and select Add extension if you accept them.
- After confirmation, find it in Edge’s Extensions menu.
Edge also accepts extensions from its own Add-ons store. Use a current store page. If installation is unavailable or blocked, these general steps do not establish compatibility. Microsoft’s installation guide
Once installed, open YouTube in that same Edge profile. Check the extension’s options and reload the page after making changes if its effect is not visible.
Start with one distraction, then check the result
Before selecting every checkbox, decide what you want the page to do. A useful starting point for watching a lecture is:
| What interrupts you | Setting to look for | What to keep available |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing before you start | Hide the Home recommendation feed | Search and your chosen channel links |
| Clicking away during a video | Hide recommended or related videos | The video and its normal playback controls |
| Drifting into comments | Hide comments | The description if it contains course links |
| Continuing after the intended video | Disable autoplay | Manual playback of the next lesson |
This is a suggested setup, not a claim that every DF Tube version offers each control. Check the options in the extension you actually installed.
Change one thing, then open a video you already intended to watch. Can you reach it, use the controls and return to your course? If you use a lecture playlist, leave playlist features available until you know which ones you need. Removing useful navigation can make a study session harder.
Then check the page where you usually get distracted. Hiding recommendations on Home and hiding suggestions beside a playing video are different jobs. Verify the relevant screen rather than assuming one successful change covers the whole site.
If DF Tube does not work in Edge
Start with Edge’s extension controls before changing several tools at once. Microsoft recommends checking that the extension is enabled, looking for updates, restarting its enabled state, keeping Edge updated and checking the required permissions. Microsoft’s extension troubleshooting guidance
Use the symptom to narrow your next check:
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The extension appears installed but does nothing | Open Edge’s Extensions menu, choose Manage extensions and check that it is enabled. |
| It works only after you click its icon | Review site access. Access granted only when clicked differs from automatic access on YouTube. |
| It works in an ordinary window but not InPrivate | Check whether InPrivate access is enabled in the extension’s details. |
| One element still appears | Confirm that your version offers a setting for that element and that the setting is enabled. |
| YouTube behaves strangely with several extensions | Temporarily disable other extensions that alter YouTube, then check again. |
Edge lets you review extension access through Extensions → Manage extensions → Details. Where the available permissions allow it, grant access to the site the extension needs instead of assuming it requires every website. Microsoft’s site-access instructions
If the failure persists, report the affected page and setting through the installed extension’s support route. Include whether the issue occurs on Home, Subscriptions or the watch page. “Recommendations still appear beside the player” is more useful than “it is broken.”
When an alternative makes more sense
An extension is the relevant category when your goal is to change the YouTube page you watch in Edge. Unhook, for example, describes hiding suggestion feeds, comments and other distractions. Check its current browser options and settings before choosing it. Our Unhook alternatives guide compares that interface-focused approach with other workflows. Unhook’s website
A different problem is having research channels, cooking channels and entertainment mixed together whenever you check for new uploads. Cleaning up the player does not decide which sources belong to each project.
That is where Feedvault fits. It is a separate browser workspace for grouping chosen public channels into chronological Feeds and saving selected videos into Studies with free-text notes. It does not modify YouTube’s watch page: playback opens on YouTube, where the normal interface and ads still apply. If hiding the sidebar is your only goal, a suitable extension addresses that more directly.
Feedvault is a paid product with a seven-day trial requiring no card. Consider it when organizing sources and retaining useful videos is the part of your workflow that needs help. See the subscription organization guide and current plans.
For your next session, choose one video first. Turn autoplay off, make only the interface changes you need, and check that the resulting page still supports the way you watch. You will learn more from that small trial than from installing several similarly named extensions at once.
